BART Warns Cyclists to 'Lock It — Don't Lose It'

Bicycles at the Pleasant Hill BART station were tagged Wednesday with leaflets explaining how to properly lock a bike.

Cycling to the Pleasant Hill BART station can be quite a convenience — until your bike gets stolen.

BART is trying to encourage local cyclists who leave bikes at the Pleasant Hill station to "lock it — don't lose it," by leaving informational leaflets on the handlebars of bicycles at the BART racks.

The leaflets include a list of tips on how to properly lock a bicycle, as well as a form bike owners can fill out and keep with the proper identification specifications of the bicycle.

Here are the bicycle theft prevention tips that BART police recommend:

• Use highest quality U-lock, heavy-gauge chain, or handcuff-style lock. Cable locks alone are easily cut.
• Always lock your bike to a rack.
• Try to lock your bike in a well-lit, well-traveled area.
• Take any bike part that can be easily removed with you.
• BART Bike Stations and lockers provide additional security. Visit www.bart.gov/bikes for more information.
