City To Consider 'Save The Dome' Appeal at May 6 Meeting

A public hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 6 at City Hall.

The "dome" theater has one last chance to be saved from demolition, depending on the outcome of a public hearing set for May 6, 7:30 p.m. at Pleasant Hill City Hall.

The hearing will consider an appeal filed by Martha Ross and the "Save the Pleasant Hill Dome" group requesting that the CinéArts theater be protected as a
"culturally vibrant" and "historically rich" piece of Pleasant Hill life.

Meanwhile, SyWest Development is preparing to give the Crossroads Shopping Center a makeover and has already been granted a demolition permit that can be executed at any time, regardless of the pending appeal.

"Save the Pleasant Hill Dome" argues that demolition of the 46-year-old theater is contradictory to the goals set in the 2003 general plan to preserve historical sites and structures and create a "gateway" community.

"We who care about saving the CineArts Dome Theater agree it could use a makeover," states the appeal. "Yes, it’s looking a little funky and it’s not quite at the peak of its style... But architectural consultants hired by the city say the building possesses physical integrity and merits serious consideration as a local landmark."
