County Library Marks Centennial

Multiple events celebrate centennial of Contra Costa County Library, which is headquartered in Pleasant Hill. Events on Saturday at Lafayette and Martinez libraries.

The Contra Costa County Library, headquartered in Pleasant Hill, is celebrating a century from books to e-readers.

To the musical accompaniment of "You made me love you," take a video journey through a century of public libraries on the system's website. You can find a written chronology of your hometown library here.

The first county librarian was Alice G. Whitbeck. A century ago, the first library opened in Walnut Creek. It was followed shortly by Concord, then a Danville library in 1915.

The library system is scheduling events at local libraries to mark the centennial, starting this Saturday at the Lafayette and Martinez libraries.

The Staples discounts are not really all that helpful. You can usually find lower prices atRead More Wallmart or on Amazon and you must spend a large amount (a couple hundred dollars) all in one month to get any cash back reward at all. If you spend money on school supplies spread out, like $150/mo, you do not accumulate enough in any one month to get any reward at all. The deal sounds great, but I've found it completely useless and frustrating. I think it's a ploy for positive press only, and of little help to a teacher.
