A New Pope is Chosen: Jorge Maria Bergoglio of Argentina

The new pope will take the name Francis.

The Roman Catholic Church has a new pope: Cardinal Jorge Maria Bergoglio (to be named Francis) from Argentina.

What do you think about the new pope — the first non-European and Jesuit — to fill that role?

, according to the Association of Religious Data Archives. That's an increase of nearly 90,000 people in three decades.

For more information on the new pope, see the Huffington Post coverage.

What direction should the Pope Francis take the church in? Tell us in the comments.

Anne Mobley March 15, 2013 at 06:27 pm
Who knew blowing smoke would have caused such comments!!! Haha.
God bless the Catholic Church while it is under attack from every direction. God bless Pope Francis in his very holy and revered position. Having been to the Vatican years ago, I felt like I was outside with the throngs of people to see and hear the new pope as it happened. On another note, I think it is quite amusing that an avowed atheist is quoting the bible. Maybe we have a convert here or again, maybe not. You just never know where people are coming from. Could be confusion. Who knows. God bless the non-believers whoever they are.
Chris J Kapsalis March 15, 2013 at 07:09 pm
I was pointing out a passage from their own book that showed they were failing if their goal is to follow the word of the bible.. Do you understand that? Also, as I mentioned, I like some sayings in lots of different books/beliefs. Wiccan. But I am not Wiccan. Rabbi's will say something I may really like and quote, is that ok, even though I am not Jewish, and quote them if I like it and it is relevant? Meanings comes in all forms, I never try to close my mind to any wisdom I like, despite were it came from. And speaking of where things come from, are you aware many things in the bible were borrowed from earlier beliefs, such as paganism? Some originated in the writings of the bible, some not. People claim to have said it first, but most of it is author unknown, such as King James. I love a lot of King James, but you know what, King James never said any of it. Shakespeare comes to mind. Are we splitting hairs again or what? The only definition of atheist I use is the first one, 'One who denies the existence of God" That's all. Not souls. Spirits. Life after and so on. I do not buy the Bibles God story myself, but just the fact if one believes in God or not has Zero to do with how I feel about them as a person. zero. It also has zero to do with if they are a good person or bad imo. Zero.

1) Chris: where are You going with this! You say for instance "King James" never said any of the things in the bible! How do you know what he "SAID" He could have read from it, Hence "Said it"! You don't even grasp the "The King James Bible" was not his writings, Rather that he "Commissioned" by him! There were some 47 clergymen that worked from 1603-1611 to "Translate" it and put it together, hence the name the 1611 King James Bible!
Very few people have the "Original text" as it is written in "Old English" and thus difficult to read! I have a copy, Basically as there is a I BELIVE 14 page "Note to the Reader" that the work has done to the very best they could do, however some words "May be mistranslated"! This is very common when You take any language from one into another, if You understand such things! Have you never asked a person that speaks a language "Foreign to you, how do you say, some word"? Many times they will say "We don't have a word that means exactly that"! Chris certainly You have a right to any belief You have, or none at all! Certainly some religion's are "Atheist" but BELIVE in a soul... as they don't look to a singular "GOD" existence, case in point is Budism! What I don't grasp is you are jumping from one religion to another saying "I like that part" but I don't BELIVE in the religion! We get that Chris, again it is your RIGHT! Just as it is Your right not to say/// What You do BELIVE in!
DONALD E. BARKLEY March 16, 2013 at 12:01 am
2) What is so disturbing is that again This Thread is about what "People think of the election of THE NEW POPE"! Sadly as in this answer to you, it takes away from that discussion!
I hope very sincerely that the New POPE, doesn't ever have to take his Precious time on this "Unraveled Thread"!
Chris J Kapsalis March 16, 2013 at 12:02 am
Ooops I meant King Solomon. Forgive me.
Chris J Kapsalis March 16, 2013 at 12:08 am
I make no exscuses for me sayign the wrong name sometimes. King :Solomon" was considered one of the wisest men of his times, yet form what I read he never wrote any of it, but people wrote in his ame wisedowm, which stillI do nto ignore. My point is I can like a saying not matter if it is in the Bible , or some other book or belief. I have no agenda. I feeel I am open minded and even in politics I do nto agree with everything my party satnds for, far from it, and also I do not disagree with everythign Republicans stand for, far from it. I was not a fan or Reagan, but he said a coupethings I may quote, and nice sayings, wisdoms. Does not ean you cannot quote someone just beccause you overall believe differently.
DONALD E. BARKLEY March 16, 2013 at 12:08 am
ANNE Indeed .... I Hope and Pray that GOD Blesses each and every ONE of them! We Have our Blessings!
Chris J Kapsalis March 16, 2013 at 12:12 am
I am sorry to waste so much of your time and energy. I meant King Solomon. And I am sure the Pope will not be reading htis thread. Does he even speak English? Maybe. Bt still. Me and you are both as much to blame as the other on irrelivant comments. But I don;t feel that way really. It all branched out form a comment "Tottally ignore all athiests" which is very relivant to this article and issue. Shoudl we toattally ignore others who believe differently? I believe not. That is dangerous imo.
DONALD E. BARKLEY March 16, 2013 at 12:42 am
I so hate To Respond are You saying "King Solomon" wrote a full Bible?? One Song at times called "The Song of Songs" also in Proverbs, King Solomon has had some of his, Proverb's retained and have made it into The Bible!
Again you speak of what You know Not! You just I assume read I said I belive Atheist have full Right's! Just as I have the right to (as do you or anyone) To read, Ignore or Dismiss any "Teachings"! Plus The POPE does Speak and Read English, I fear if he saw this thread Chris, HE MAY REGRET IT!
Chris J Kapsalis March 16, 2013 at 12:54 am
Of oucrse not. King Solomon is in the bible, as well as in other books and beliefs. Ho did you get that from what I wrote? Donald your slipping. I aid I like some writings, wisdom in the bible, and mistakenly used King James name instead of King Solomon. I sure hope the Pope is not that thin skinned to worry abotu an obsure website on the other side of the world by some obscure perosn he does not know and what I wrote that you misundertood anyway. Geeze. Lets drop this. Of course I kow he did not write a whole bible. But his teachings, wisdoms are in t\he the bible. You are now splitting hars I feel. As I said just because a story is in the bible, wisdom, does not mean I automaticlly dismiss it. You can believe some of a book, but not all of that book and so on. Because I like a few sayinsg, does not mean I am confused or not an Athiest or possible coverting, dspite what Anne said again. Geeze. I respectuflly bow out of debating with you anymore. Nothing personal, you just keep completely misunderstanding me. Have a good night Donald.

Chris I hope you are resting well: You say I don't "understand you".. well that's easy as you state "you say the WRONG NAMES"! From King James that did commission a Bible! To "no I meant King Solomon"!
bellow was YOUR STATEMENT "People claim to have said it first, but most of it is author unknown, such as King James. I love a lot of King James, but you know what, King James never said any of it. Shakespeare comes to mind". ....... Then you say "I meant King Solomon"/so ok let's substitute Solomon's name//and we have/ People claim to have said it first, but most of it is author unknown, such as King Solomon. I love a lot of King Solomon, but you know what, King Solomon// (That's with YOUR Name Change that" I MEANT) "never said any of it. Shakespeare comes to mind"! So You like a person for ///Saying things that "guess what He never said"! So you like ..Someone's Words, that never said them/ Those are your words!! Darn William Shakespeare got off easy! later you post/ "Ho did you get that from what I wrote? "Donald your slipping.".... I am slipping yet you are saying "ho"? Is that as in Santa Ho Ho ho-ing or some poor "Street ho"? I have "slipped" TOO far to know, what you referred me to... or what it means!
DONALD E. BARKLEY March 16, 2013 at 02:19 am

Mary: I AM TAKING A" LEAP OF FAITH" That you not "regular" WITH an ALIAS and adgenda"! Especially AS YOUR POINT IS VALID! I HOPE OTHER'S listen TO you! Note that Alford is not Wrong, Devote People Were attacked, Lied about in Both Belief's Ideas and Intelligence Insulted!
However As STATED you HAVE A GOOD point! I AM ONE OF THE PEOPLE THAT SADLY has "Posted" FAR MORE OFTEN THAN I WISH, on this Thread!..... Not that I take back a word of defending My Belief's Against Vile attacks plus flat "STUPIDITY"! However if all other's shall just move the "Off Topic" Statement's and take our Discourse ELSEWHERE" ... I AM ALL FOR IT! I AM A DEEPLY Devout Christian! my first Post asked a person "Off topic" To follow a friend of his, even as she and I have had troubles (Frankly I hold her no Grudge,This is Civil Discourse, not war so I thought) Still She had Posted then a Very respectful statement! I Thought such Should be continued! Mary I am willing to "Post no more" on this thread that is "Off topic", if other's can follow the same decorum! With Your "Point Taken Mary" I ask other's to say, move this discussion to say the "Black Widow" site? At least there we start with "Venomous Thought's" Mary Be Well and Let's See! May GOD BLESS ALL and Let's Give the "New Pope" a Breather? Plus Our Prayers! Time shall Tell, My Word as a Christian shall stand! Still Christian's Won't be again "Feed To The Lion's" Donald E. This is a long post so I have had to make it as three posts.
The question is – In what direction should Pope Francis take the church? Since I have a busy life, especially during the work week, I haven’t had the time to write a thoughtful response. Unfortunately, unlike some, I do not have time to hunker down at my computer and post to the same thread every thirty minutes 24/7. But back to this great question; imagine having the opportunity to voice your opinion to the Pope. I know this can only happen in the imagination, for as a priest once informed me, the church is not a democracy. Needless to say I found another church to attend, because, though I know he spoke the truth, I don’t care to have the clergy be so in-your-face about it. Oops, off topic! Anyway back to the question; in what direction should Pope Francis take the church? Though I have a great many suggestions I will stick with just three. First, there is no question that the honor and reputation of the clergy must be redeemed. Let’s face it, people simply do not trust priests anymore, and not just because of the molestation charges. There is also the breach of trust committed by the church’s hierarchy in covering up the actions of these men and then moving them to other diocese where they found more victims. For the lay community the hypocrisy and hubris of such behavior from trusted church leaders is difficult to fathom.
Ivy Rangee March 16, 2013 at 09:53 pm
This is a continuation of the above post.
Thus radical steps must be taken to repair the damage. First, the church should allow priests to marry if they wish. This would have the twofold benefit of resolving the lonely life led by priests, who, though they are surrounded by their flock, are nonetheless apart from them, being intermediaries between man and God. Secondly, the church should allow the ordination of women, gradually promoting them into the upper echelons of the church. This would give people uncomfortable with male priests another option. Also, it would humanize the church hierarchy, leading it to be more pragmatic and less dogmatic.
Ivy Rangee March 16, 2013 at 10:00 pm
This is the final section of my post in case they are out of order. So read this last.
Next, Pope Francis took the name of one of the greatest saints to ever live. Saint Francis was a man of true compassion for all beings ‘great and small’ as well as a great teacher who lived among his flock and knew their weaknesses. His spirituality looked inward, and it is my hope the new pope will lead his flock to also look inward, following the words of Jesus: “You hypocrite, first cast the beam out of your own eye…” Finally, I hope Saint Francis will truly help the poor, and not just with platitudes, but real action, including allowing birth control. Perhaps he could take a page from the book of Women Religious, who walk the walk. The Vatican’s holdings are vast; Pope Francis certainly has the resources to make a difference.
Ivy Rangee March 16, 2013 at 10:05 pm
Chris, It seems that this is not widely known, but a member of the clergy informed me many years ago that the church has accepted the truth of evolution.

Can we now publish book and stories on Patch and not even use or real names? Some others open an new account to post one statement and that just fade away
or other to keep their alter ego on many other Patch sites to be used to misdirect the conversation and manipulate it direction? Some of these post are the same person?By allowing this to happen the Patch will loose it credibility.

I know not what This piece of work is meant to bring to this discussion! There are Thousands of such that could be "Copy and pasted here"! In this context is it to enter a piece of literary work into a spiritual discussion! Also and or their may be an unreasoned attempt to draw physiological thoughts basing on, well to put in more common terms "Knowledge" Where in the end we cannot prove nor disprove the existence of GOD! This always in any Religion comes down to FAITH!
epistemology is such an "Exercise" that encompasses, or tries to address many of life situations and theories and situations! As indeed we may be certain to say it is impossible to direct any philosophic endeavor of man to encompass all things it FAILS!

The Statement "Spinoza Knew" (he being a Believer of "God and Nature" Tells us a lot.... Especially the "Spinoza Knew"! This post is predisposed of "One Man's" Ideas ...and that "They are True, Indeed Fact", WHY Here ????
To reiteriate is that in the final analysis we end "Debating the very existence if GOD EVEN EXISTS! This serves only as a Backdrop! AS we are left with what is the basis Concept, the True Test of Christianity that is its Beauty! One Being of "Faith and Belief" IN GOD! Belief and LOVE in That Not YET SEEN! PS. Why the post....
