Thunderstorms Possible in Bay Area Today

Storms are approaching the coast from the South, heading north. Temperatures are still expected to be warm. Do you hear thunder?

By Bay City News Service

Thunder and lightning may be in the cards for parts of the Bay Area today as an offshore weather system makes its way through the region, a National Weather Service forecaster said.

A thunderstorm passed through Santa Cruz County around 5 a.m. today, meteorologist Steve Anderson said. Two lightning strikes were recorded in the hills above downtown Santa Cruz, he said. The system then passed through the San Jose area, bringing light showers but no lightning to that area, he said. More storm activity off the coast is making its way inland, and other parts of the Bay Area could see thunderstorms and light showers throughout the day, Anderson said.

It will still be warm, however; temperatures are expected to reach about 80 degrees in San Jose, he said. San Francisco can expect highs in the mid-60s. No weather warnings are in place, although Bay Area firefighters are keeping a close eye on the situation.

"It's always a major concern when we get any thunderstorms coming through during fire season," said Charles Snyder, communications operator for Cal Fire in the Morgan Hill area.
