Summer Movie Snacking -- Award-Winning Tips

Summer is a time for hanging out at the beach or a nearby lake, but the air conditioning and exciting blockbuster hits make going to the movies a popular summertime activity too! Many people have go-to movie theatre food and beverage rituals, and everyone’s are a little different. Some head straight for the popcorn station, while others hit the candy counter.

So how do you enjoy the summer movie season without going over the deep end nutritionally? You’ve probably read articles estimating the caloric damage caused by some of the most popular movie fare, so I will spare you from the shock and awe of the exact calorie and fat totals. Instead, I can give you some tips to help you lose a few extra calories without skipping the fun.

·      FUN-SIZE RULES—Trade the large candy container for several fun-size bags or bars (if your local theater doesn’t sell this size, you might have to smuggle them in via your purse or pants pocket). Since you know you only have a few small servings to last through the movie, you’re more likely to eat them slowly and mindfully which will really engage the senses.  Peanut M&M’s are one of the best options because they pair peanuts with a bit of chocolate.

·      GOTTA HAVE POPCORN? —If move theatre popcorn is non-negotiable, opt for a junior size or sensible serving of it. Some movie theatre popcorn tastes great without the “butter” topping, but if you are someone who really likes the yellow stuff, just ask for a light drizzle. While the small and junior sizes are definitely not the best value for your dollar, it will be the best value for your health--encouraging mindful eating since you bought a sensible serving instead of a bottomless bucket. If allowed, bring a bag of popped light microwave popcorn to the movie with you.

·      CHEW GUM—Instead of mint candies, chew some mint-flavored gum. Not only will gum help clean your teeth after eating popcorn, it will also keep your mouth busy during the movie so you’ll be less likely to snack on something else out of boredom.

·      SMART SIPS—Don’t forget that beverage calories count, too. If you want to save extra calories for popcorn or candy, choose a smaller portion of your favorite soda or opt for a diet soda.  Beverages with low and no-calorie sweeteners are an easy way to control calories and ultimately your weight. If you’d like to bring your own drink, the Coca-Cola mini can or water bottles fit nicely in a purse or fanny pack.

·      AVOID BEING SUPER HUNGRY—Eat a balanced and healthy meal or snack before you go to the movies. This should consist of some lean protein, whole grains, veggies and healthy fats. This should keep you satisfied and “craving free” for several hours.
