Early Morning Fire Destroys Martinez House

No one hurt in the one alarm blaze.

A one-alarm fire destroyed a home on Kendall Court in Martinez Wednesday morning, but the residents escaped unharmed. The smoke from the hillside fire could be seen for miles.

According to a Consolidated Fire District spokesman on the scene, the call came in at 6:02 a.m. Crews responded and determined that a second alarm could be called off. The fire woke up the residents of the home, who got out with no injuries.

As one of the residents emerged from the home, frantic and unable to phone for help, she encountered a newspaper deliverywoman who had spotted the blaze. Using the deliverywoman's cell phone, fire crews were called and the blaze was brought under control before it could spread to ajoining homes or the grassy hillsides.

The cause of the fire is still unknown as of Wednesday morning, the Con Fire spokesman said.
