'Dome' Theater Demolished

The CinéArts "dome" theater in Pleasant Hill was demolished along with The Loaded Hog bar on Wednesday morning.

After an appeal to save the Pleasant Hill "dome" theater failed at a public hearing Monday, the developers went ahead and demolished the building without delay. The 46-year-old theater was torn down Wednesday morning.

The demolition came just hours after the Save the Pleasant Hill Dome group launched a fundraising appeal to fight a legal battle to save the "dome" theater.

The group hoped to get $50,000 of donations by Wednesday night and file a restraining order.

Bill Vierra of SyWest Development, the property owner, said he did not know about the restraining order effort, nor about a Mother's Day brunch that was apparently being planned for this Sunday outside the "dome."

"We were going to have balloons and everything," a "dome" supporter told Vierra.

Vierra said that SyWest moved forward with the demolition because the appeal had been denied. He said that he understood the sentiment felt by those who appreciated the "dome," but hoped that the experience would inspire people to be more involved in city government.

Around 50 people spoke at the "dome" appeal hearing Monday, and Vice Mayor Jack Weir said he was "absolutely overwhelmed" by the level of public participation.
