I am a senior citizen Gregory Gardener. I remember and miss the days when the Dome and the mallRead More were great places to go. The holiday mall was filled with artists and vendors, from whom I bought many a gift at Christmastime. I regularly shopped the other businesses attached to the mall. I do not drive to Berkeley anymore, and will really miss the ease of attending great movies in the Dome. I will not restate my belief that we DO NOT need another sporting goods store.
A Gregory Gardener May 10, 2013 at 05:06 pm
Also, Robert, there is the small matter of the fact that the Dome was centrally located, and withinRead More easy walking or driving distance of a Senior housing community where elders could come to see matinee movies. Not so with the Solano Drive In.
A Gregory Gardener May 10, 2013 at 04:29 pm
@ Robert--I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that you brought that up!! It segues right into the fact that theRead More ever-community-minded Sywest has plans for the existing Drive-In theater down the road in Concord involving a large grocery development, I believe. Look for this in the news, or on Concord Patch .( http://concord-ca.patch.com/articles/drive-in-on-dome-demolishers-list-of-development-projects). I wonder if the city of Concord will listen to your idea--if the Planning Process is not too advanced, already...! Oh, goody. another battle with Vierra and development-minded city planners. Whoo-hoo... (not).

To maximize all things...a combination dance hall for slow dancing with a full bar and a screen at one end could satisfy the whole deal. It would not have to be huge. I would have suggrested an ice skating rink, but older folks don;t need a broken hip. Ice rinks are sooo romantic. The old Pasadena Winter Garden was closed as an ice rink, but the years of it being an ice rink froze the soil way down and they had perma frost for years in So Cal. Yes, young and old like to slow dance to sweet old songs. Maybe there is hope....Where there is no vision, the people perish. Bob f

NO roller skating rings, bowling alleys and drive in movie theaters should stay,,,,,,

To say that the US is not a Democracy is not accurate. The US is a Constitutional Republic and aRead More Representative Democracy. They are more or less synonyms.

I wish people on this page would look into the ways that "property rights" have beenRead More trumped by the American value of preserving historic landmarks time and time again throughout our land. Respect for our history trumps property rights sometimes - and if Vierra hadn't slithered in so quickly to destroy the Dome, just because he could, he'd have found that out. Of course, that's why he demolished it before anyone could make a move.

I love this! My mom always told me how she wish she'd seen ALIEN (her favorite sci-fi movie) inRead More theater... I am taking her, PLEASE make this a regular event...Maybe some GODZILLA movies, or original Monster movies like Frankenstein, The Creature from the black lagoon, The Mummy, War of the Worlds!

Please remember not to vote for the council members who voted the appeal down. We are losing oneRead More more thing that made Pleasant Hill pleasant. Again, the voice of the people was not heard. The corporate dollar is all that mattered.
Magic 8 ball May 7, 2013 at 11:47 am
EAL You're right; corporations are not people but they are not aliens from another world either.Read More Corporations are simply businesses owned and operated by people and stock holders for profit. Since we are not a communist or socialist society YET everyone provides something to someone else in exchange for money. Whether that be labor or products we do what we do for money. Since we still enjoy private property rights in this country, if the owners of the property want to use their land more efficiently and it violates no existing laws than so be it. If the hundreds of thousands of dollars Dick's Sporting Goods spent developing their business model and business plan fails it will be the free market that decides it's fate & as it should be. Technology changes and like it or not you will either adapt or learn to like being a curmudgeon. Brick and mortar bookstores are being replaced by internet sales which will be replaced by electronic books read on iPads and Kindles. Stage plays were replaced by movies. Movies theaters are being replaced by internet TV and Netflix. Horse and buggies were replaced by car, iceboxes were replaced by refrigerators etc etc etc. Technology cannot be placed in a bottle and left on a shelf. Businesses adapt or die.
EAL May 7, 2013 at 06:18 am
Pleasant Hill doesn't need two blow-hard, overrated sports stores that replace establishments withRead More heart. Borders being replaced was terrible, but it will be the last straw if the dome is gone. If not save the theatre, at the very least people should keep the structure of the dome. Greedy, selfish corporations won't get any real money from the people of Pleasant Hill. If you want a successful business, listen to your costumers. If you want to be a successful TV writer, listen to the fans. It's a two way street, not a one way street, you little shit fucks. I don't usually use strong language but there comes a time when I have to use strong language to get my point across. I'm fed up of all these change. I'm sure there are plenty of sports stores out there. I bet corporations want to shut down establishments like the Dome Theatre so that the public doesn't get any ideas to get rid of corporations because the movies that have been shown in the Dome are movies that inspire people. They also are movies that are foreign films and documentary and off-stream films with a few current film exceptions. Pleasant Hill wants and deserves some dignified memories. If we ever hope to see a better future, we need to build on the community and NOT what the shit fucks want. Corporations are NOT people. The residents of Pleasant Hill are people because we have a strong pulse in our hearts. We need to take out the trash.

Magic 8 ball May 8, 2013 at 05:31 pm
All this pissing and moaning about how you think someone else MUST use their private property in aRead More manner to further your wants and desires is ridiculous.
mikedude May 8, 2013 at 05:04 pm
Give it up, people. You lost. The Dome is not even architecturally interesting, let alone 'iconic.'Read More No one comes to Pleasant Hill to bask in the glory of The Dome. Why do the people of California have an obsession with fighting EVERY development?

The “Save the Dome” group/board has unilaterally decided to remove people from theRead More planning group without their consent nor notification. They are acting just as forceful and unapologetic as SyWest in their practices of disallowing community member participation. What happened to principles?

Wanted to make it out to this but wasn't able to. However I have heard this showing was simply aRead More Blu-Ray disc, letterboxed on the theater's screen with masking set to 1.85, rather than a proper digital "DCP" or film print. Very sad, considering this theater at least used to be capable of showing 70mm film.

Ballys could be a lovely dinner house. The starcade could be a small beer and wine venue. Or coffeeRead More house. This Dome seats as many as the Leasher Theater, that cost 21 million to build. We have ample free Parking, free way access and Bart. We have here in the middle of Contra Costa County a cultural icon. What a venue to be shared by the entire community! Seniors and college alike. We have what Lafayette can't! I have talked to thousand of people who travel here from Rio Vista and Piedmont weekly to eat and see a movie! They shop and spend there money here- if the Dome goes so will they! The city has 35 sporting goods stores within 8 miles of the Dome. I have seen the list. The seniors of this community, including Walnut Manor had no knowledge of loosing their Dome. They walk weekly to the movies. When they asked me what was going to be built, I said a Dicks Sporting goods store. She was 88, and said " honey I should walk over and buy a gun". I don't think the city, the developer realize the void they will leave in the hearts of this community ...... If you don't live here you can't possibly understand how we cherish our very last icon left from our past! If you demolish it we will be nothing box retail stores........ We would go live in Emerville! Please excuse the typos from my phone.

The city creating a memorial to the dome is like the prison warden sending flowers to the family ofRead More the executed prisoner.
Glen Simmons April 17, 2013 at 01:13 am
If the City is stupid enough to demo the dome there is no reason to "remember" it with aRead More stupid memorial. As one speaker said at the Planning Commission, we don't want a tombstone, we want the Dome.
B.J. Britton April 16, 2013 at 03:49 pm
If the Dome has to be demolished, let it rest in pieces. No memorial will take away its loss andRead More will mean nothing in a few years. What we need is a new Cine-Arts art film theater, and maybe then, and only then, a mural of the Dome to memorialize it would perhaps be appropriate.

Like last year's I phone.....what we were inspired by is simply now taken for granted. When the domeRead More was built it exceeded expectations and was the finest in family entertainment. Now how our standards have fallen so very very low as what we feel inspired to build. Like the I phone someone was inspired to make money and offer a great idea as they made millions but sadly this discount sports store is not original, inspired or addresses our real needs for the next fifty years.Contra Costa has grown very affluent but our taste has become quite poor. It can be easily said the developers simply" phoned this one in" at our expense.

Or Emeryville even. Reading the DICKS IS NEW THEREFORE GOOD posts in this forum has made it crystalRead More clear to me that you really can't force culture, analytical thinking on folks who's comfort level involves living in a tidy cookie-cutter world. Be prepared for more of: "we have more money than you and Sywest has more money than God" and " it's my property and I'll gentify if I want to" reasoning. It's all they know, have pity. Sad commentary on the local lack of vision.
Iris Alfonso-Giebus May 9, 2013 at 04:47 am
If we're to protect any remaining theaters from the corporate machine we need to do it now beforeRead More we're late to the game. Any strategies NOT exclusive of the droning mantra "we have more money than you" should be considered. There is significant venture capital out there that could eat Sywest for lunch and are supportive of the arts. The good news: Sywest is fairly predictable, we should be thankful for such small favors. They will resort to tried & true tactics; buying politicians, lawsuits, profit as a primary goal and dirty tactics. Unfortunately, Sywest perceives of preservationists as predictable as we do they; bleeding hearts who react rather than plan ahead. They can be beat at their own game when we plan & reach out to local PATRONS and PROTECTORS of the arts before the wrecking ball arrives. Nuff said.

I drove by the Dome yesterday and was saddened by the chain link fence, the empty lot, the signRead More stating that the theater was closed. I was like someone punched it in the nose. I guess the Council would prefer a higher flow of tax money versus the flow of culture, heritage, and knowledge. As I looked deeper into the building I could see the interior lights glowing as they always have since I started attending the venue in the late 1960's. And on a positive note I imagined the City Council making the right vote, to preserve, protect and encourage the extended development of the Dome, a decision that wouldn't leave the area's patrons sucker punched for Dick's dollars. As I said in a previous post, I dont think the theatre aspect only justifies its saving. Nostalgic,Read More yes, but I suspect the building itself carries allot of weight in its saving. This building could be re-directed into a dinner theatre, or even a perfoming arts center. If it is torn down, the people still have recourse....do NOT patronize any other business. This will drive the business into the red ink. There must be a real convincing of the developers that the people are AGAINST IT. Good luck in which ever road is taken. DO NOT BACK DOWN IN YOUR STANCE. b

I have watched hundreds of movies in the Pleasant Hill Dome, and am saddened by the city's lack ofRead More commitment to the only dome remaining in the east bay. I lived in Reno in the mid 90's and watched the demolition of the Century dome theater on Virginia Street to expand the Peppermill's parking lot. It was a tragic loss, since many people went to the movies at the dome in Reno, then walked over to the Peppermill for dinner. Another sporting goods store at the Pleasant Hill location will take business away from REI and Sports Basement, which rely on the city to help them remain viable. Adding a superstore close to the two existing sporting goods stores (not to mention Sports Authority less than a mile away) is unfair and unnecessary and will reduce sales at REI and Sports Basement. It's ironic that 25 years ago there was a fine sporting goods and scuba outfit next to the war memorial on Contra Costa Blvd. It was torn down to make housing. If the council wants to help it's citizens, build affordable housing at the dome site. At least that would provide a neighborhood to complement the existing retail and restaurants on the north side of the development.
Glen Simmons May 5, 2013 at 10:21 am
There are two important meetings at the City on May 6th regarding the dome. The first at 4:15 theRead More Building Department will consider appealing the Dome demolition permit. The second is at 7:30 when the City Council will consider appealing the Planning Commissions decision the approve the Dicks Sporting Goods project. Wear red to both meetings to show your support to save the Dome.

The CineArts Theater is now the ONLY cinema venue in all of Contra Costa County where you can seeRead More alternative, independent, and non-blockbuster movies. There is a thriving audience for these kinds of films and the theater is an important cultural bulding block supporting a diverse quality of life out here. It deserves to be saved. Betty J. Cherene April 10, 2013 at 07:46 pm
I owe you an apology. You seem like a nice person and I was a little snarky. Your experiences wereRead More not good in the small theatre. I don't think we were in that flat floored theatre. As for going to the other side of 680, we don't like that scene as it has become like Walnut Creek and anywhere USA. It's too much of a hassle and we can't just get up and go at the last minute because it takes so long to get a place to park. You make excellent points about where art films are going - to Berkeley and San Francisco. Too much hassle for a film less than 2 hours. Staying home, but we have to clean up our own popcorn spills.
Captain Bebops April 10, 2013 at 03:34 pm
Betty, I keep up on the local theater scene and I know that since the last time I was at theRead More Cinearts there have been no renovations. They wanted to do some but the landlord wouldn't allow it (from article in the CC Times). Only the dome had true stadium seating and these domes were probably the first to offer such in the Bay Area. I watch movies on a big screen all the time. I've had a home theater since 2000. Did you know that 55" TVs are going for less than you paid for that 27" TV in the late 1980s? Pair that with some a reasonably priced surround system and you'll have a decent home theater complete with pause and rewind. You don't get those in a theater. And I don't get some dummy putting his stinky sneakers up on the top of the seat next to me or talking to his girlfriend all the way through the movie. Rude patrons have driven away many people from theaters. I saw "Olympus has Fallen", not an arts film but something I was curious about and couldn't believe that some idiot kept taking calls and checking his smartphone throughout the movie. And BTW did you know that some of the more popular foreign and independent films often play on one of the screens across the freeway and also the one in WC? I'm sure CineMark will continue to do so. Also here in Martinez the Contra Costa Cinema occasionally shows some too.
Betty J. Cherene April 9, 2013 at 08:35 pm
Well, while you were sitting at your computer, we were in front of the theatre - standing aroundRead More talking to each other as if we were old friends. It was more of a cocktail party without the liquor. It was peaceful land heart fulfilling to be with one's "kin".
