Fresh At the Farmers' Market: Perfect Plums

Plums are in season until September and available at your local farmers' market. Here's the farmers' market schedule for Pleasant Hill and nearby.

This week's featured product at the farmers' market is the plum, a fruit commonly deep purple but ranging in color to vibrant yellows and greens.

Plums can be eaten fresh or dried, when they become prunes — a food item hailed as a digestive aid and used in breakfast cereals or salads. The plum is a good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and contains several antioxidants, according to the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association (PCFMA).

To soften hard plums, place several in a loosely closed paper bag and leave them at room temperature for a day or two, PCFMA suggests. When the plums have reached the desired firmness, put them to the refrigerator. Ripe plums can be refrigerated for up to three days.

Find plum recipes like Plum Chutney on the PCFMA website.
