Should Pleasant Hill Ban Plastic Bags?

The Pleasant Hill Chamber of Commerce is asking locals to share their thoughts on whether or not the city should ban plastic bags.

An online survey from the Green Business Committee includes the following questions:

1. Would you be supportive of a plastic bag ban at grocery stores in Pleasant Hill?

2. Do you currently bring your own reusable bags when you grocery shop?

3. Would you be supportive of paying a small fee for a paper bag?

Alameda County has already implemented an ordinance prohibiting single-use bags, starting Jan. 1, 2013. The ban stipulates that recycled-content paper and reusable bags can be provided by retailers at a minimum cost to the customer of 10 cents per bag.

Contra Costa has yet to follow suit in the plastic bag ban, but a group of Lafayette residents are petitioning to have the city become the first in the county to pass such an ordinance.

Last month, a proposal to ban plastic bags across California failed to pass in the state Senate.

What do you think? Should Pleasant Hill ban plastic bags or charge a usage fee? Share your thoughts in the comments.
